Being With Jesus . . . Living on the Edge

Last summer Lutheran Women’s Missionary League discovered the answer to the question, “Will it play in Peoria?” Judy Mueller and Jean Albert learned it most certainly did! 4,600 women from all over the United States met in Peoria for the thirty-fourth Biennial Convention. Judy had been to many LWML conventions. It was Jean’s first. Beginning with registration on Wednesday, June 22, until the final closing remarks on Sunday, June 26, a whirlwind of events took place, including an opening Communion Service on Thursday, and a closing service on Sunday, each with a mass choir singing. And have you ever sang “When the Saints go Marching In” with 4600 people and the President of the LCMS playing the banjo? We did and it was awesome!

WHAT WE DID AND WITNESSED:

SERVANT ACTIVITIES: 2,587 quilts were assembled; 2,382 towel sets put together; 2,795 underwear sets were made up; 5,587 kits for men, women and children were put together; Bibles were marked highlighting passages about Jesus and His love for distribution to people at Yselta Lutheran Mission in El Paso Texas, cancer victims, and at a Chicago mission opportunity; 300 welcome kits were made for students at Illinois School for the Deaf; fleece blankets made; bandages rolled; 89 units of blood were donated; Gospel necklaces assembled; Swahili Psalms in Braille books were assembled; and 13,205 Arch books collected. And all this was done in 6 hours on Thursday, June 23rd!

GENEROUS GIVING: $121,372,67 was gathered in offerings over four days. A Mission Pledge Walk and Golf Outing brought in over $10,000.

PARADE OF FLAGS: flags representing the 89 countries around the world where LWML has funded a mission project were paraded throughout the arena.

TWO BIBLE STUDIES:  Dr. Reed Lessing led us on the theme “Being with Jesus – Living on the Edge,” “For we cannot help speaking about what we have heard” from the book of Acts.

MISSION GOAL ADOPTION: A Mission goal of $1,825,000 for the 2011-2013 biennium was approved. Mission grant resolutions were presented and voted upon. The funds raised over the next two years by LWML’s 250,000 members nationwide will be used to support 19 mission grants.

GUEST SPEAKERS: Dr. Ken Klaus, Speaker of the Lutheran Hour 2002-2010; Deb Burma, noted speaker and author; Katie Stam, Miss America 2009; Dr. Matthew C. Harrison, President of the LCMS; Dr. Kurt Senske, CEO of Lutheran Social Services and author of “ Living a Life of Significance.”

THREE MITES IN ACTION SPEAKERS: Dr. Paul and Becky Shaw, Light of Christ Chinese Ministry; Rev. Jeff Johnson, Senior Pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church, Cleveland, Ohio; Paul Miller, Principal of Unity Lutheran Christian Elementary School, East Saint Louis, IL.

THREE MISSIONARY SPEAKERS: Dr. David Birner of the LCMS International Mission; Andrea Herman an evangelistic trainer to women in Guinea; Rev. Todd and Kim Roeske, evangelistic missionaries and church planters serving in the Philippines since 1993.

PROPOSED AMENDMENTS: Presented and adopted.

ELECTIONS: Candidates were introduced and elected.

ELECTED OFFICERS REPORTS WERE RECEIVED.

STANDING COMMITTEE AND SPECIAL REPORTS WERE RECEIVED.

DISTRICT PHOTOS WERE TAKEN.

EXHIBITS WERE SEEN.

As you can see, it was a busy 4 days. A lot was learned. We were entertained, we laughed, we cried, we prayed, we sang, we shared, we served, we learned, we loved, and most of learned how life-changing it is to be filled with the Spirit. Dr. Reed Lessing pointed out Barnabas as a great encourager in the book of Acts. “The LWML woman may not be able to be a Barnabas,” Dr. Lessing said, “but she can be a Barna-babe!”  How do we become people who speak encouragement? Dr. Lessing offered three suggestions we can all take to heart: stay in the Word, tell it like it will be, and demonstrate honesty and humility in all we do.

Ladies, mark your calendars and start saving! The next LWML Convention will be in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania from June 27-30, 2013. You NEED to go!

And they realized that they had been with Jesus. “For we cannot bur speak the things which we have seen and heard” – Acts 4:13b, 20 NKJV
